Related

Sikkim witnessed over 22,000 domestic and 651 foreign tourists last week, according to the officials of the state Tourism Department. An average of 5000 tourists are visiting Sikkim every day and is expected to double in the coming days

The state govt had removed all Covid-related restrictions and reopened its borders, resulting in the surge during this festive season.

The industry had suffered a loss of Rs 500-700 crore last year due to the two-month lockdown in the peak season, said the officials. The tourism industry generates annual revenue of Rs 4000-5000 crore, on which a quarter of the state’s population is dependent.

The state has seen several landslides in the last 3 days causing multiple roadblocks. The Chief Minister has urged people not to travel now.
